History of Cap Camarat

Thehistory of Cap Camarat dates back to the Napoleonic era – traces of human occupation from this period have been found. This site on the Saint-Tropez peninsula has subsequently seen many high points, notably the construction of its lighthouse and semaphore in 1829, buildings that were occupied during the Second World War. Although in 1950 the Société Civile Coumipez succeeded in purchasing part of the Domaine Camarat to build a house with several outbuildings, other plans to build housing estates were ultimately rejected by the commune of Ramatuelle, on which Cap Camarat depends. In 1977, the land was transferred to the Conservatoire du Littoral, which works on a daily basis to conserve, preserve and promote its heritage.

Cap Camarat lighthouse

Rising 130 meters above the sea, the Cap Camarat lighthouse is an emblematic site to discover during your getaway on the Saint-Tropez peninsula. Although it cannot be visited at the moment, for safety reasons, the Conservatoire du Littoral is planning to open it to the public. The lighthouse has been automated since 1977, so there’s no longer any need for a lighthouse keeper. For the keepers who were lucky enough to climb up there, the lighthouse offered a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Since 2012, the lighthouse has been listed on the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques.
